“Being considerate of others will take your children further in life than any college degree.”

Parenting advice: Kindness starts at home |
In today's chaotic, turbulent and violent times, cultivating kindness and compassion in children is one of the most difficult tasks for parents. Especially nowadays when we are bombarded with news of violence and terrorism – it makes it all the more necessary to develop compassion and kindness among children and make this world a better place.
Kindness starts at home. If we don't provide a healthy environment to our children, how can we expect that our children will grow up to be compassionate people? If children keep seeing their parents cribbing, screaming and fighting with each other, what will they learn?
The primary responsibility of instilling the values of kindness, compassion and sensitivity towards others in children lies with the parents. Parenting children means much more than providing food, shelter and protection. Schools and teachers also have a significant role to play in the overall child development, but value education essentially begins at home.
Develop humane and universal values
To help your child develop the humane and universal values of love, sharing, kindness, compassion, helpful attitude and respectful nature, you must learn to be careful and alert about your own behavior, not only with your child but also in the presence of your child. Parents must set examples of good behavior for their children themselves.
Parenting advice: Encourage your child to participate in positive activities |
Encourage your child and engage yourself in activities that encourage and manifest positive energies such as donating to a charity, helping your friends and neighbors, keeping in regular touch with family and relatives and being a good citizen. When your child sees you helping others, he/she too will develop the inclination to help others.
Teach children to treat even their toys with care. Don't allow kids to throw books or toys. Rather encourage them early in their childhood to handle toys or books with respect. Also, help your child learn to appreciate the good things of life such as appreciating the efforts their teachers make so that they are able to study and learn and appreciate the love they receive from their friends and family.
Discourage abusive behavior
And discourage your child if you see him/her using abusive language or disrespecting other cultures or languages. It is your duty as parents to explain to your children gently how their actions can hurt the other person's feelings. You must encourage the feeling of co-existence and acceptance among your children.
Make sure that your children don't watch cartoons, programs, movies or play video games that are excessively violent in nature. Constant exposure to visuals and images that speak of destruction can have a bad effect on the young minds.
Motivate your child
Expose your children to things which generate the feeling of compassion and kindness among children. Narrate to them good stories that celebrate morals and values and tell them about great personalities who have changed the world for the better and let them learn to differentiate between the good and the bad. Encourage your child to watch motivational videos that talk directly to the child in a simple, effective and inspiring manner which the young mind understands easily.
